Becoming a DTR

The Commission on Dietetic registration (CDR) defines a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) as an individual who has:

  • completed a minimum of an Associate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, or foreign equivalent;
  • completed a minimum of 450 supervised practice hours through a Dietetic Technician Program as accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA);
  • successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians; and
  • complied with the Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) recertification requirements

OR

  • completed the minimum of a baccalaureate degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, or foreign equivalent;
  • met current academic requirements (Didactic Program in Dietetics) as accredited by the Commission of Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA);
  • completed a minimum of 450 supervised practice under the auspices of a Dietetic Technician Program as accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA);
  • successfully completed the Registration Examination for Dietetic Technicians;
  • accrued 50 hours of approved continuing professional education ever five years, and;
  • complied with the Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) recertification requirements.
